FABical Mystery Tour, Sunday 23rd August

Having taken months of planning, the day arrived to try Dave Shep's Mystery Tour and see whether we really do know where we're going! Eleven bikes, with seven pillions, four marshalls, and Dave, duly turned out on a sunny Sunday morning to be given instructions and set off at two minute intervals.
The instructions were in the form of letters, for example, TL for turn left, XRDS for crossroads and TJ for T-junction. For good measure, Dave had included some interesting additions, GT for green triangle meaning a small patch of grass where two roads converge. Points were to be awarded for arriving early or late at checkpoints, with the rider earning the least points being adjudged the winner.
As we set off it was immediately apparent that some did not know the local area as a couple who had set off early were seen returning in the opposite direction!! Getting lost is one thing but finding your way back to where you got lost is almost impossible!
Two checkpoints were established along the route although we didn't know where or what time we were supposed to be there. The idea was to arrive at our unknown destination nearest to a set time. Most appeared to be aware of where we were supposed to be although a few did set off in different directions! The first checkpoint was established at the car park at the top of Wrotham Hill, at the same time that the boot fair was open. Most arrived there on time and continued on. The next checkpoint was by the petrol station on the A26 at the junction with Three Elm Lane and from there we made our way through to Marden, the final destination.
Most arrived within a half hour period between 12.30 and 1pm although a few did get lost. We won't mention Stewart and the Gravesend Road! Last to arrive was Roy who had experienced some bike related issues but at least all managed to get there without having to open the map that Dave provided for emergency use!
After a very well received lunch Dave announced the results, with Paul Willis, and Lynda, receiving top prize for only losing 8 points.
Well done indeed to Dave for organising such a good day, to Mary, Jan, Bill and Liz for marshalling and to all who took part.
